Self-taught Artist/Arthur, Synthia Saint James was born in 1949 in Los Angeles, California. Her professional career as an artist began in 1969 in New York City where she sold her first commissioned paintings. Today she is an internationally recognized fine artist. You'll find her work on over 50 book covers (which includes books by Alice Walker, Terry McMillan, Iyanla Vanzant and Julia Boyd), and on many licensed products.
Since 1990, she has completed over 30 commissions for major corporations, organizations and individual collectors. Including Essence Magazine's 25th Anniversary, Coca Cola's "The Lady of Soul Awards", The House of Seagram, Kayser-Roth/Maybelline, Attorney Johnnie L. Cochran and The United States Postal Service, who commissioned her to create the first Kwanzaa Stamp made available on October 22, 1997. It is important to note Ms. Saint James was the first African American commissioned to create a holiday stamp on behalf of the United States Postal Service! To date, Ms. Saint James is an artist that goes beyond that of painting, as she currently has 11 Children's books on the market, two of which she wrote. Ms. Saint James recently completed a signature piece for the African American Visual Arts Association entitled, Our African Diaspora, which is serving as the first of a series of works that she will create to raise funds on behalf of the organization's "Art is the Key" program.
